Another big win for the Tiger's

WALLER — A&M Consolidated is bound for the third round of the state playoffs, and the Tigers secured a first-class ticket Thursday night.

Consol seized immediate and complete control in the first half and cruised to a 49-0 beating of Magnolia in the Class 5A Division II area football playoffs at Waller ISD Stadium.

The Tigers (9-3) won their second postseason game in seven days, earning a berth in the regional round, where they will play next week against Crosby (11-0) or Fort Bend Ridge Point (8-3). Those teams will play their area game Saturday at NRG Stadium in Houston.

Magnolia finished the season at 10-2.

A short week of preparation did not bother the surging Tigers, who have won eight of nine games since going 1-2 in nondistrict play.

Consol scored on six of seven possessions in the opening half, giving the students carrying flags spelling T-I-G-E-R-S a serious workout and forcing an extended postgame high-kick line featuring Bengal Belles and a few players who kicked for each point.

Tigers coach David Raffield did his best to prevent a more lopsided score. Consol passed only once in the second half — of course Cade Williams made a gorgeous diving catch for 36 yards on third-and-10 — and the Tigers punted twice from inside Magnolia territory, once on fourth-and-1.

Along with the gaudy passing numbers produced by quarterback Mason Hickson (20-30, 334 yards, three touchdowns), Consol’s defense dominated for the second consecutive playoff game. The swarming Tigers limited Magnolia to 106 yards on 47 plays. Consol made 11 stops behind the line of scrimmage, giving the Tigers 26 tackles for loss in two games.

“They came out tonight to play, on offense, defense and special teams,” Consol coach David Raffield said. “The execution was phenomenal. It was crazy. The kids just kept getting better and better every series. It was an amazing team effort by a bunch of guys who just love playing together.”

The Bulldogs had to rely on sophomore quarterback Reese Mason, who moved into the starting lineup after junior Jacob Frazier broke his hand two weeks ago. Mason lost 20 yards on 14 harried carries, and he completed 5 of 10 passes for 15 yards. However, the outcome likely wouldn’t have changed with Frazier or most any other high school quarterback running the show.

Consol will get a couple of extra days of rest before playing on Thanksgiving week for the second time in three seasons. In 2013, the Tigers won three playoff games and reached the state quarterfinal round.

The Tigers did almost nothing wrong in the first half. Consol sent a couple of kickoffs out of bounds and could have been better on kickoff coverage, but on the bright side, the Tiger kickoff team got plenty of practice after six touchdowns before intermission.

Consol was so good that its punt team outscored the over-matched Bulldogs and the Tiger defense had nearly as many yards in tackles behind the line of scrimmage as Magnolia gained offensively during the first half. The grizzly halftime statistics showed Consol with a 384-52 advantage in total offense, and the heat-seeking Tiger defense produced eight tackles behind the line of scrimmage after making 15 tackles for losses in the 35-20 bi-district win over Waco.

The running game had been the defense’s dance partner in recent weeks, but Consol went to the air with devastating effectiveness against a Magnolia secondary that looked a couple of steps slower than Waco.

Hickson completed five consecutive passes on the opening drive, which he capped with a 3-yard touchdown run. The skies were even more friendly after the Consol defense forced the first of six three-and-outs in the opening half. The Tigers got the ball at their 22 and needed just two plays to score.

Tony Williams caught a 20-yard pass and then sophomore Cade Williams ran an out route, shook two would-be tacklers and scampered down the sideline for a 58-yard touchdown that made it 14-0.

Magnolia finally got a first down and reached Tiger territory early in the second quarter, but the drive stalled and Consol put together a back-breaking 89-yard scoring drive that took just six snaps. The Tigers scored on a trick play, with punter/safety TJ Raniszeski flipping a shovel pass to linebacker Jonathon Sylvester, who lined up as a blocker before speeding 43 yards for another touchdown.

The Tigers added three scores in the last 5:30 before halftime. Hickson threw his second and third touchdown passes, as running back Robert Franklin scored on a 40-yard screen pass and Cade Williams snared an 8-yarder on a post route into good coverage. The other score also came from the receiving corps, as senior Rodney Jernigan found the end zone from 7 yards on a jet sweep run.

Consol’s defense got big plays from throughout the lineup. The Tigers had quarterback sacks by Trevor Williams (two), Cooper Atkinson and Noah Langley in the first half.

Linebackers Coy Winder, Trevor Williams and Sylvester paced the Tiger defense, but they had to hustle to make plays before their teammates. Sophomore safety Kolby Peel joined the parade of Tigers who had tackles behind the line ad Magnolia managed six first downs, three in each half.
