Tigers take down district leaders

A&M Consolidated's boys basketball team missed so many shots early that the Tigers seemed to have little chance of outscoring district-leading Huntsville. But when the Tigers didn't succeed in putting the ball through the hoop, they treyed, treyed again.

Junior guard Layton Dimery made four 3-pointers and scored all 14 of his points in the fourth quarter as Consol broke open a tight game to beat the Hornets 60-46 at Tiger Gym on Tuesday night.

Tre Flowers and Trey Pulliam contributed five treys in the first three quarters and combined for 39 points that helped Consol put itself into position for Dimery's closing burst. Flowers scored 11 of his game-high 24 points in the third quarter, as the Tigers overcame a rim-bending first half that included 13 misses on 15 shots behind the 3-point line.

Consol made half its 26 shots in the second half -- including 7 of 9 in the fourth quarter -- after connecting on 21 percent in the opening quarter.

"We just started talking, running our offense, trusting our coaches and doing what we're supposed to do," Flowers said. "The shots started falling, and everything else kind of fell into place. It felt good. It was like we were just playing, that we weren't really worried about losing or what was going on with the crowd. We were just having fun."

The Tigers (13-10, 5-1) joined Huntsville atop District 18-5A. Consol will finish the first round of league play with a visit to Willis on Friday.

"We needed to win this game because we have to go to Bryan, to College Station and to Huntsville in the second round," Consol coach Rick German said. "Those are three tough teams."

Huntsville (14-8, 5-1) lost sole possession of first place. The Hornets had a chance to take a two-game lead in what was a back-and-forth game for three quarters. Huntsville took its last lead when Ricko Bennett hit a 3-pointer that made it 41-39 to start the fourth period.

The rest of the game featured Dimery's 3-point accuracy and Pulliam's ability to slice through an extended defense meant to guard against outside shooting. Dimery, who missed most of the third quarter after picking up his third foul, lit the fuse on what turned into a 21-5 closing burst when he scored eight consecutive points on a couple of treys and two free throws.

Huntsville got within 52-46 on a 3-pointer with 3 minutes remaining. But Flowers drove down the baseline and passed to Dimery for another trey. Pulliam used a hesitation move for a three-point play, then drove again and scored on a scoop shot as Consol pulled away.

"The problem in the first half, especially in the first quarter, is we were taking shots without running our offense," German said. "In the second half, when we started penetrating and kicking out to shooters, they were able to set their feet and get a good look at the basket.

"When Layton got back in the game he settled in to playing his game. That's setting his feet, catching the basketball, hopefully getting a good pass out and knocking down the shot. It's not anything new for us. We know he can do that."
