September 9, 2011...Tiger Swimming & Diving Getting Ready for Season to Start
COLLEGE STATION --- The A&M Consolidated boys and girls swimming and diving teams are gearing up for another season. They have been in the water for two weeks, and so far head coach Ryan Goodwyn likes what he sees. "We've had a strong influx of freshman girls that are going to make a huge impact in the years to come," Goodwyn said. "By the time this group of girls reaches their junior and senior years, they could be one of the top girls teams in the state."
These young freshmen are being led by a very strong crop of returning girls that includes four state qualifiers from last year's squad: Teresa deFigueiredo (11th), Shelby Buenger(12th), Robyn Miller (12th), and Shelby Lerew (10th). Goodwyn believes that his girls have a very strong chance at winning their third district team title in a row. "Of course we want to win districts," Goodwyn explained, "but we'd also like to think beyond that. We won Regionals in 2009, and we came very close to that again in 2010. This year, we have the talent to make a run at that regional title again, but we've got to contend with two very tough teams in Tyler Lee and Mansfield High School.Of course, the ultimate goal is to get as many of these girls as possible to state and see how high we can place there."
On the boys' side, Goodwyn has equally high goals but admits that the road may be a little tougher. "We graduated a lot of strong talent in the last few years," he admits. "But, I think that we still have good quality talent in the pool, and some of the most focused, competitive kids I know. Tyler Lee is going to be tough at the district level. They've got an amazing team with a ton of depth. However, I still think that if we all swim up to our potential, we can repeat as district champs."
After winning all the district titles from 2005-2008, the Tigers came in second place to Belton at the district meet in 2010. "They came in to that meet completely shaved and rested as a team, which really surprised us," Goodwyn admits. "It also lit a fire under our guys and made them that much more eager to come back and beat them at Regionals that year, which we did. Last year, rested or not, our boys were determined to not let them win it again. This year, to repeat as district champs, everyone will have to step up."
Consol does not return any state qualifiers from last year's squad, but they do bring back a strong crop of Regional finalists, including Cody Green (11th), Nasan Tsengeg (10th), David Deng (11th), Fernando Zambrano (11th) and Ryan Olivieri (12th).
Not one to shy away from tough competition, Goodwyn has scheduled Regional powerhouse Tyler Lee as their first meet of the season. "Why hide?" Goodwyn asks. "We're gonna see them at the end of the season and need to know what we're up against. It would do us no good to just schedule easy teams that give us a false sense of where we are. We might as well face them now and see how we match up so we know how much we need to prepare."
